Hello! Recently I had the opportunity to illustrate the month of September for the 2012 Handprinted Calendar, put together by the great folks at Kid Icarus!

Here are the details!

On Sunday December 4th 2011, our highly anticipated 2012 Handprinted Calendar will be available for sale at our storefront in Kensington Market. You can also pick up an early copy at Handmade Holiday, Saturday December 3rd, St. Stephen-in-the-Fields. The calendar is a limited edition of 125 copies, with only 100 available for sale at $80 each.

If you are unfamiliar with the project, the concept is to take 12 artists and produce a calendar with each artist choosing one month to illustrate and only two colours to pull it off. There are no guidelines on layout or how the information is presented, the artist has full control. The entire calendar is screen printed by hand from the cover, right through to the backing.

Calendars will be available for sale at Kid Icarus, and other locations (TBA).

The 2012 calendar roster includes: Reverend Aitor, Anjo Chiang, Mike Ellis, Melinda Josie, Hyein Lee, Claire Louise Milne, Nolan Pelletier, Jeannie Phan, Halley Rigbey, Katherine Verhoeven and Selena Wong!

Thank you to everyone who came out to OZ Studios last Thursday for the 'Group of 30' show! And to David Kleiser for getting all of us together. Originally, I had wanted to make the table all out of cherry, but due to concerns, I thought I might use hard maple as well. The branch will be carved out of walnut, but I worked out 10 variations with the cherry and maple. (Some I like more than others.)

Furniture 1

For our assignment we had to find an old/discarded piece of furniture and transform it into something new; we had to give it a new meaning.

Picked up this mdf/veneered tabletop off the curb, sawed it into pieces to make a leaf shape and put them back together using biscuit joints and glue. Found the branches in my backyard to use as legs, two of them had been cut from my cherry tree a few years back.

I have to say that it was quite wonderful finally being able to see his paintings in person (and the man himself!) since the last time I had, which was probably about 8 years ago. Good feelings, good vibes and a whole lot of inspiration.

During the past week, I had been spending more time in the wood shop than in my own bed. Making lots of things, nothing really to do with illustration, but keeping myself happy as long as I am creating.

Today I found out that my mom used to work with my wood studio teacher's son - what a small world and a crazy coincidence. I almost want to send a note to say that: I know your dad and you know my mom! But not really.

My mom also told me that the Indian guy who came to clean our furnace today really liked my painting of men wearing turbans whose moustaches are actually coat hooks. I'm just so happy he wasn't offended!

This is the first time in a few years that I've been able to enjoy the Autumn season. Making lots of things in the wood shop and painting in my basement is what I've been up to! And collecting pretty leaves to slip between the pages of my newly made sketchbook.

Here are some mushrooms that are still in progress:

Two 'shrooms, four woods: walnut, hard maple, ash and cherry.

The one on the right has a hole in the base to put small things into after taking the cap off. The one on the left is an 'error' due to my trial-and-error learning process. And I think I might cover the round cap with more of those wicked red leaves that I found on the way to OCAD. Perhaps..

Last week, I discovered that my skin is terribly sensitive to walnut wood. Such a shame to be allergic to such a beautiful wood!

I borrowed this book from my library that I never want to return entitled 500 Insects: A Visual Reference. It's got in-depth photographs with a brief description on every page for each of the five hundred insects enclosed.

This was my favourite, though it tickled the hairs on the back of my neck!

Second assignment for Jody's illustration class: design a cover for the chosen one out of four given books. I chose Yann Martel's Life of Pi and was really keen on the yin and yang concept. Came up with three different versions of the composition, and went with the last (not shown).

The first one is how I had envisioned it from the start, but the metaphorical entanglement would have been easily confused with physical contact between the two characters. That was a no-go, so I ended up with the finished composition; not disappointed. With wicked feedback from everyone, I ended up handing in the first one, but I still find the close-cropped one interesting as well.

How awkward is that arm? I think I might brighten up the colours in photoshop, but for now I added a bit of an "atmosphere" to the whole damn thing. Is the yellow too harsh? Too much blue?

These were the only two watercolour paintings from Bob's class that were closest to being finished, otherwise I've got about 10 others that were started but never committed to. Anyways, I like that my portrait kind of reminds me of David Mack's stuff. Sort of.. (I wish!)

Also, while I was painting this today, Bob found lips that were cut out of a magazine on the floor and picked it up and put it on my painting and said, "There you go!" It was so funny!! And it looked so damn good! Unfortunately, I lost the lips sometime between showing my sister and running to my scanner. (SAD FACE)

April Calendar Page
We have to create a page for a calendar that involves a Canadian author associated with that month. It also has to promote literacy. L.M. Montgomery died in April (the month that I was assigned) so naturally, I focused on Anne of Green Gables.
1) Anne looks Asian. Ambiguous race is good! Her face is enlightened by the book, yay literacy.

2) She is just so damn happy to have a book!

3) Montgomery's first published works were mostly in the newspaper, so I've got this girl sitting on book steps reading a newspaper with an Anne face on it, positioned so that it sort of looks like it belongs to the person reading it.

SNL and their Political Impersonations
For an editorial assignment, I pretty much have a 4 x 4 inch square to accompany an article about how Saturday Night Live scored big when Palin came into the picture because they are notorious for presidential impersonations. Furthermore, the article stated that their impressions are usually successful whilst making the character more sympathetic; however, they have not yet been able to play out McCain as his notable physical qualities aren't something to laugh about.
1) Tina Fey with a Palin puppet, pretty straight forward.

2) One of the opening lines of the article was something like "SNL received a gift when Palin came into the picture". Palin-in-a-box.

3) McCain can be adorable, too!

4) Ever realize how much Palin and McCain resemble the Pinky and the Brain?

I did this today/this morning, instead of going to work, for my illustrative activism class that I had just a few hours ago. My first digital attempt at creating something in colour, I don't think it's half bad...

I'm thinking of changing the "in the media" from both images into something that may read as relevant/help emphasize the point of the issue once I'm done with everything else this week..

Also, the colours got wonky the first time I tried uploading the first image, but it I kinda dig it:

But Doug said that I need to make it look less analog! So I added a few blending modes to some of the layers and this is what I came up with, which didn't change much, but I can't think of where to go from here...
